Should Texans be allowed to openly carry handguns?
Posted: 11/20/2008 7:11 am

A billboard on Interstate 45 is raising some eyebrows - and awareness of gun rights laws in Texas. It's a little-known fact, according to OpenCarry.org co-founder Mike Stollenwerk, "Texas is one of only six states in our nation that bans the open carry of handguns... and that's kind of odd, because Texas is - at the end of the day - pro gun." Peter Hamm with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says he's torn on the issue, because he says this is better than "concealed carry"; However, "If you have a gun in plain sight, you make other people nervous. Does that include a criminal who might be thinking of attacking you? Sure, we'll give that point; but you make the entire community nervous." Gun store owner Jim Pruett and his employees have already signed the open carry petition, saying the fears of gun control advocates in this case are unfounded.

I support open carry. A law abiding citizen qualified to handle fire arms should be able to carry a hand gun without concealment. Yes, it will catch the attention of a potential robber or assailant but, it should not be feared by others. People who become fearful or nervous at the sight of a fire arm are for the most part completely ignorant on the subject. I am a retired Marine and also served in the Texas Army National Guard. I have instructed people on the handling and care of a fire arm and enlightened some who once had no clue on the subject.

Absolutely! Open Carry should be allowed.
Every gun right that is made legal is another step toward freedom and liberty for this country again.
This does not mean that you have to carry open, you will just have the option. I prefer concealed for myself, but if open carry was allowed, I would carry open on occasion if for no other reason that to desensitize the public so ppl don’t freak out when they see a gun.

Dant, if you open-carry, are you gonna get a deflector shield to mount behind your holster?

My theory for emptying the prisons has, for some time now, been the following:

Set up and make public a date for the mass release, telling anyone who's interested to bring their weapon(s) of choice, with plenty of ammunition, and form a circle around the prison. Then release the prisoners and any who make it through that circle alive are free to go.

ABSOLUTELY!

We should also go back to public hanging on the court steps.

Sure...Why not...The issue has been discussed at great length in the pro-Second Amendment community, and both sides for and against it are well founded...

I personally reject any "reasonable restrictions" on our inalienable right to keep and bear arms as any law-abiding citizen see fit...

Being one of 6 states that do not allow this capability, is truly immature in my opinion, and that the nervous people in our community need to grow up and accept the fact that there are people out there who take their self-defense seriously enough to warrant this moral and common courtesy to do so...

Most states that have this capability have always had it, Texas is going to obviously have a tough fight to get this passed into law, for the very reason that it is a relaxation of an infringement that has been around since the civil war...

Why should I trust a politician, who doesn't trust me with a gun?

Therefore I support this movement, and hope it at least gets a day on the floor of our state legislation for a vote...Up or down, (hopefully up) I can respect the process that got it there for consideration...

Just remember, the sun will still come up in the morning either way...

I think this has the potential to give the economy a great boost.I think we need some designer holsters with rhinestones and some really hot tie down strings.I heard you can get pink guns with "my little kitty," on them.I, personally want an over the shoulder holster with the gun right on my left hipbone. That way I wouldn't have to have anything under my jacket and I could pack heat when I am wearing a dress.Personally, I want a really light gun,for when I go to the theater or symphony or something, and I am wearing a nice evening gown. And when we go to the big blow-out Christmas party, I need a corsage holster, with a little derringer-type gun. Maybe one that looks like an orchid or a poinsetta. My greatest idea is to have a flat gun that can fit in my laptop case. That would open up the market for flat bullets. That would help a lot when you shoot someone in a crowded place, the bullet won't pass through the first person's body and hit someone else because it would be flat. We could have gun holsters in our cars instead of cup holders, and when people come into an office or business, they can hang their guns up, the way they put their umbrellas by the door...but, would that make it easier for the bad guys to just grab a gun though?
And gun warmers, there is nothing as irritating in the morning as having to strap on a cold gun.
Also, I think they should reinstitute the dueling laws and designate dueling centers, that would be a money maker for some smart entrepeneur..actually, we could use the old Astrodome for that! And charge admission. We need to use the old quick draw rules, though, keep it orderly.

Of course we should--but I'm a little concerned what the reaction of the general public might be. Since getting my CHL I've made a "hobby" of trying to spot people carrying. There are a lot more of them than most people realize. If we were all to start carrying openly...well, I don't know.

Would I carry openly. Yes, occasionally, but I've found much truth in the comment that feeling that hard steel in the small of my back reminds me to maintain my situational awareness.
