  Should Candidate Sexual Orientation Matter?

Some people are making an issue of Houston Mayoral Candidate Annise Parker’s homosexuality. Is that fair?

Of course it matters. Tolerance doesn't mean you have to LIKE something. And you can always not vote for someone because there's something about them you don't LIKE.

This is one issue where I do not side with conservatives. I really feel people are born gay, because let's face it, if it were a choice, how many women would choose not to put up with men's BS, or vice-versa? :) Seriously, though, her sexual orientation has nothing to do with how well she can perform her job duties. There are gay people all around us, and there always have been, and if they suck at their jobs, it is for reasons other than sexual preference.

All other things being equal, it might be, but there are other far more important issues facing our city.

Maybe it shouldn't but it does. A persons sexual orientation lends to their ideals and many will not have those same ideals. In fact many will be totally against them. Right now, I think there are a lot of people who think Houston will turn into another San Fran. if Ms Parker is mayor. There are many homosexuals in Houston and undoubtedly they will be wanting every advantage they think they deserve. There will be petitions and lawsuits played out. Ms Parker will have to decide what is right for the city and not what it is she may want. I think there are just not enough people in Houston, right or wrong, to give her a fair shake for many reasons. With all that is going on, is Houston ready for what would come with her being voted in?

I've been longing for a time when our language was governed by sanity, rather than PC nonsense. "Gay" is a term that used to mean happy or jovial. Now it has come to mean homosexual. The term that used to be used for homosexuals (at least male ones) was "queer". That means odd or unusual, which is appropriate, when applied to someone who is odd or unusual, as homosexuals are,
so the answer to the question regarding Annise Parker is "it depends upon her character". If she is using her sexual orientation to her advantage, which she appears to be doing then I suppose it does matter. If, on the other hand, she were just running as herself and not "the lesbian candidate" it would not matter....or at least not matter as much.

Yes, Sexual Orientation should matter unless it's human on human and both parties are consenting. People that are into weird sex with anything other than consenting humans should be banned from society.

Annise Parker's sexual lifestyle (or orientation for those who believe in that premise)is a very important part of the voter's decision for two reasons. Statistics show that most people still believe homosexuality, bisexuality, transgenderism, etc. are wrong, immoral and or sinful behaviors. A candidate running who was a known adulterer could not expect it to be glossed over in the scrutiny by voters.

Second and at least as importantly, Parker's lifestyle is her public policy and her aggressive commitment to undefining marriage, promoting the normalization, teaching and governmental promotion of those lifestyles runs contrary to the clear, established will of the voters.

Alternative sexual lifestyles are destructive to children, families and marriage, so are therefore a threat to the social, economic and moral stability of society. That reality makes the issue fair game in a race for the highest elected office in the fourth largest city in America.

No. I could care less about someones sexual orientation. As long as they don't let it effect their job.

NO, a person's abilities, past performance record, and character should always supersede ones personal preferences in a partner. I am sick and tired of race and sexual orientation being some kind of qualifier or dis qualifier in the minds of the media. Most people, Conservative or Liberal just want an honest, do what you say your going to do, politician!
