Should Wal - Mart employees be required to speak English?
Posted: 11/7/2009 1:17 pm
I went to Wal-Mart this morning to pick up a few minor things, and while in the cosmetics section I could not find cotton balls anywhere. I go up to a "customer service" employee working the floor to simply ask her where I could find cotton balls. Her reply was, "Que?". Maybe she didn't hear me correctly I thought, so I asked again and got another "Que?". I know some Spanish, but I could not conjure up the word "cotton balls" in Spanish at that moment.
For this reason (and the fact that they only have 1 register open overnight) is why I just hate going to Wal-Mart. That's not to say I'll never shop there again, but for crying out loud this can be frustrating as heck!
If anyone associated with Wal-Mart is reading this, hire English speaking people, dang-it!!

As I see it, you have 3 choices: 1) learn to communicate, 2) whine about it, or 3) vote with your wallet.
If a business like Wal-Mart thinks it is important to their bottom line to have all English-speakers, they will. It they don't they won't.

No problem with keeping your native tongue alive, although, I wonder if your native tongue is so important to you why you would want to leave your native land in the first place.
You know, if I could go back in time, that is one question I would like to ask my ancestors. Why didn't they force their language on this nation?! Why couldn't they adapt the native American language!

Well, my ancestors were from England and migrated to Americas. Instead of learning the local language, they imposed their language on the locals. Sound familiar?

I believe that companies get around not requiring all employees to speak English, by saying that this country doesn't have an official language. I say to that, what language was the constitution written in? I believe it was english! Doesn't that make English the official language?

I agree with you on the business language. What I should have said is when this subject is approached by a politician their response is we (America) don't have an official language.

Since Hispanics are the fasting growing minority and they are not forced to fully assimilate to American culture and companies want those dollars, they often hire Spanish speaking employees. What needs to happen is English made the official language, with the provision that a translator will be hired when necessary in legal proceedings and the offender on trail whether guilty or innocent will get a bill for the use of a translator. This country needs to wake up and smell the coffee and recognize that this country will make far more advances with an official language.

You tell em there girl. If they don't speak English, shoot em. In fact, shoot their families too in case they were thinking about not speaking English.
In fact, let's start nuking anyone who doesn't speak English. That will teach them. Them Quebec guys got their nerve. The rest of Canada speaks English. Why can they? English not good enough for them?
And where does Mexico get off speaking Mexican? They should be speaking English since they are so close to the US.

"we can start eliminating the people who do not speak and write correct English."
Not so fast my friend. That would take out most of Texas. In fact, you and I might not make the cut.

Hilarious as usual, Trog. And as usual, elements of truths. As Mao said, "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun."
I don't see much difference in the folks with the most guns cramming their language down people's throats versus cramming their religion down people's throats.
The reason we speak a form of English versus Native American is because the white guys had the most guns.
However, we're finding out more and more that the guys with the most guns don't necessarily win anymore. Viet Nam and Afghanistan are good examples.

this ain't no fooling around." - Life During Wartime
